ALL ABOUT THE FRAYED HEM JEANS ~ DIY YOUR OWN PAIR!

Spring is here and it’s all about the frayed hem jean this season!  The frayed hem looks great on any style, from ‘mom jeans’ to ‘skinny jeans’.  They can be easily DIY’d or if you’re not a crafty person and prefer buying them, they’re available at almost any women’s clothing store.  Keep reading to learn how to DIY a pair of thrifty jeans.  And if you’re diggin’ the pair of frayed hem jeans I’m wearing in this pic, find out where I got them and other similar pairs!

DIY IT!

All you need is a pair of jeans, scissors and chalk. (Tweezers optional)

Start by measuring where you want your hem to end and where you want your fray to start.  I’m around 5′ 6″ and I cut my hem around 56 inches and started my fray at 55 inches measuring from the inseam. It doesn’t have to be perfectly measured.  You can totally just eye ball it!

Once you figure that out and cut of the bottom off, start stretching the fabric to make the threads loose.  Now, you have a choice to end it here and throw them in the washing machine to give a little bit more of a frayed look or you can continue reading to see how to add the full frayed hem.  FYI, the frayed hem does take a while to do.  So, if you’re not really a crafty or patient person, I suggest skipping this part.  It took me roughly an hour to do.  The plain cut looks great too and if you scroll down to the bottom, I have added my favourite frayed hem jeans that you can purchase!

To achieve the frayed look, start by cutting diagonal lines across the bottom.  The length of the cuts is up to you and how long you want the fray to be.

Use your fingers first to stretch the material to loosen the threads.  Take your tweezers and start pulling out the white horizontal threads.

Right leg is the completed frayed hem and left leg is the plain cut. If you want more of a longer fray, keep cutting & removing the white threads.

Here is the final look! I originally wanted to do a longer fray, but to be honest, it was just way too much work! haha! But I’m happy with the small fray and I know I will wear them a lot this spring.

My favourite pair of frayed hem jeans are from Zara, (Shown below).  The jean is a stretchy material, which really frames the butt well and are the most comfortable pair of jeans that I own. Haven’t been able to take them off!
