I was ecstatic to see that my DIY candy costume made it in The Oprah Magazine this year! So unreal!!! Since then I’ve been getting lots of messages on how I made this costume. Unfortunately, at the time I didn’t take many photos during the DIY process, but I hope this blog post can give you some guidance and tips to make your very own. It’s a fairly easy costume to make and can cost under $20!
What you’ll need…
This costume took some trial and error. The first one I made, I used a T-shirt and glued the candy right on it. By doing that I found the circle shape of the candy got lost, so I re-did it. The second time around I used bristol board and it turned out much better, so just ignore the T-shirts in the picture! Everything else you will need…
- 3 pieces of white bristol board (not in picture)
- Elastic (not in picture)
- Stuffing
- Cellophane gift wrap
- Ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Candy & hair clip or headband
How to make it…
- Draw a big circle on the bristol board. It should cover your whole upper body.
- Spread out the stuffing and hot glue it onto the circle.
- Use the cellophane gift wrap and wrap it tightly around the circle. Hot glue it into place.
- For the ends, cut out 4 medium size circles from the cellophane. (I used one pink and one clear circle for each end). Pinch the centre of the circle to create the fluffy ends. Hot glue the ends onto the back of the circle on opposite sides.
- For the ribbon I used the curly ribbon bows you can buy at the dollar store. I found it way easier and faster to glue them on top than having to individually curl each strand.
- REPEAT EVERYTHING again to make the backside of the costume!
- After you’re done making two complete candies, you’ll need to attach them using some elastic band. Measure how long you want your shoulder strap to be, cut it and then hot glue or sew it into place. I also added a piece of elastic on each side near the hip area to keep the candy in place. (Totally optional!)
- I wore a white tank top and white shorts underneath.
The accessories…
The details are always the fun part for me. I love adding more to my costumes with extra accessories! For my hair piece I bought candy from the dollar store and hot glued them onto a hair clip. A headband would work great too.
The giant lollipop, I made with bristol board again. I cut out two circles and free handed the swirl with pink paint. To make the lollipop more 3D and less flimsy, I added foam in between the two circles. I then wrapped the whole thing with clear cellophane and added ribbon to the botton. For the stick I used the empty cardboard roll after the cellophane was done!
