If you follow me on Instagram you know my obsession for scrunchies! I was obsessed with them back in the 90’s and when they made a come back in the early 2000s, you bet I was excited to jump right back on the scrunchie train. I’m still rocking them and I don’t think I’ll ever stop! A new and fun way to switch up your scrunchie game is to wear them oversized. Have you seen this trend? I absolutely love the look! It’s a great statement piece and can really dress up an old outfit. I started to search for where to buy some, but didn’t have much success. There wasn’t much colour or pattern options that I was interested in, so it was time for another DIY!
The key to making the perfect scrunchie is all in the measurements! I did a couple test ones before figuring out the perfect giant size scrunchie. It was actually easier to make than a normal sized one because you have more fabric to work with. Here’s how to make one.
What you’ll need…
- Fabric
- Sewing machine (not necessary, but makes the process faster)
- Elastic
- Scissors
- Needle & Thread
How to make it…
I found this pretty gingham pattern fabric at Fabricland in the clearance section! (I always go straight to the clearance section there. You can find great fabric for under $5 a meter). This pattern gives me all the spring vibes and I love the neutral colour to match with most of my outfits. Another great thing about this fabric is it’s easier to measure and cut with the lines. If you don’t have any lines on your fabric, I suggest you use a piece of chalk or pencil to mark out where to cut.
Ok, here’s the most important part! The measurement for a giant scrunchie is 36 x 10 inches 😊
After you measure and cut out the long rectangle, fold it in half lengthwise with the “good side” on the inside. (My fabric pretty much looked the same on both sides). I left about an inch from the edge and used a handheld sewing machine to stitch all the way to the other side. If you don’t have a sewing machine you can hand stitch it, which honestly doesn’t take too long. Once completed, turn your fabric inside out. Because this is a giant scrunchie with more fabric, I was able to easily and quickly fit my hand through to turn it inside out.
Next you need to cut out a piece of elastic for the inside. If you have lots of hair and it’s a super thick, I suggest you use a thick elastic like this one. I found mine at the dollar store. Depending on your hair type or preference you can go thinner with the elastic. For the length you want to cut it at 7 inches.
Thread the elastic through the inside of your scrunchie. You can use a safety pin to help assist the elastic through. Stitch the elastic together tightly. I hand stitched the ends of the fabric together to close and complete the scrunchie.
Here’s the perfect oversized giant scrunchie!!! Since then I made a couple more to add to my collection. I can’t wait to style them with all my spring and summer dresses.
I would love to see all your giant scrunchies on social! Make sure to tag me and use the the hashtag #allstyleDIY so I won’t miss it!

What are the measurements of the finished scrunchy?
Hi Michelle, It’s about 8 inches in diameter (without being stretched out). Hope that helps!
