DIY RAINBOW MACRAME

I’m back with another DIY craft! These rainbow macrame pieces are so cute to add to your spring decor and could also be used as St.Patrick’s Day decor by using a variety of green colours. I love how easy this craft is and you can adjust the size to accommodate your space. You could make a large rainbow and hang it over a nursery crib, (so adorable) or make miniature ones and use them as a keychain or even earrings!

I wanted to brighten up my office, so I made two smaller ones to hang in my corner. The colours bring me so much joy and I love it! Here’s how I made them…

Supplies

  • Rope (The thickness of rope depends on how big you want your rainbow to be)
  • Four different colours of yarn (You can play around with the different kinds of yarn for texture. For a clean look, I recommend using cotton yarn)
  • A piece of felt OR if you want the rainbow to be displayed on both sides, use floral wire (See *TIP below)
  • Painters tape
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Wooden beads (Optional)
This is the rope I used. Found it at the dollar store!
  1. Figure out how big you want your rainbow to be and cut 4 pieces of rope. I eyeballed the length by forming the pieces together like a rainbow.

2. Use the painters tape and wrap the ends so that they won’t start fraying.

3. Cut a small piece of string or yarn and loop/tie it at the centre of the top rope. This will be for hanging your rainbow.

*Tip: If you are making miniature rainbows where you will see both front and back of the rainbow (i.e. earrings or keychain), attach flower wire with tape to each piece of rope to help keep their shape. When you wrap the yarn around, the wire will be covered!

4. Take your first colour yarn and tie it onto the end of your rope, right above the painters tape.

5. Start wrapping it around the rope making sure the whole rope is covered. Try not to over lap the yarn while wrapping.

6. When you make it to the other side to the painters tape, cut the yarn and use glue to hold the ends in place.

6. Repeat the process for the next 3 pieces of rope changing up the colours.

7. Once completed all four, hot glue the pieces down to a piece of felt. This will help keep the shape of the rainbow. If you’re making miniature rainbows, skip this step!

8. Carefully cut the excess felt off. You want to get as close as you can to the rainbow so you don’t see the felt from the front.

9. Remove the tape from the ends and unravel the rope.

10. Use a comb or your fingers to fluff out the ends.

11. Trim the ends so the “clouds” look even.

12. Lastly, you can add wooden beads to the top! Totally optional though. I think they look cute without them too.
